Navigating hereditary cancer risk as a previvor doesn’t come with a roadmap. For previvors like me we do our best to make informed decisions about our personal health and family. We manage screening appointments and follow-ups, consider prophylactic surgeries to reduce our risks, deal with unanticipated side effects, share genetic test results with family members, all the while living with an uncertain future.

After testing positive for an inherited mutation in a cancer gene, next steps look different for everyone.

  • It might mean talking with a genetic counselor or healthcare provider.
  • It might mean sharing your genetic test results with a family member.
  • It might mean learning about screening or risk reducing options.
  • Or it might simply mean taking some time to process this new information.

There is no single way to navigate hereditary cancer risk.

But you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Here’s a curated list of organizations and resources that provide education, community, and support. These organizations have been invaluable in supporting patients and families, navigating hereditary cancer risk.

As we close #NHCW2026, I hope you’ll take the next step that feels right for you, whether that’s learning more about your family health history, starting a conversation with a doctor or relative, or finding support.

I also encourage you to consider sharing your story. Your experience may help someone else feel a little less alone.
