Genetic testing requires a blood or saliva sample, which is collected using a special kit that is shipped overnight to Ambry Genetics by your healthcare provider. The testing takes less than three weeks to complete, and results are sent to your healthcare provider.

The average cost for testing is $100 or less, and we will work with your insurance coverage and provide options for accessing our high-quality genetic testing based on your individualized needs. Genetic testing technology and the number of genes tested has changed quite a bit over the years. If you were already tested but it was more than a few years ago, your provider may recommend that you consider this updated testing.

The test includes multiple genes that are associated with several types of cancer, and looks for harmful differences in these genes that may increase your risk for cancer. This is not a test to see if you have cancer, only to identify if you were born with an increased risk of developing cancer during your life.

If your results are positive, this means you are at increased risk to develop certain cancers. Each of your children and siblings would also have a 50% chance of inheriting this. The lab offers free family testing at no additional cost for any blood relative tested in the United States within 90 days of getting your results back, which can be ordered by your family members’ current physicians.

• If you already had cancer, this test may provide insight as to why you developed cancer. This can sometimes help with tailoring treatment plans. It may also help determine if you have a higher risk for other cancers.
• If you have never had cancer, you could find out that you are at an increased risk for certain cancers.
• If appropriate, we will provide individualized options to address your cancer risks. This may include earlier, more frequent, or advanced screenings. It may also include riskreducing surgeries or medications.
• Your test results may also help your family learn about their cancer risks.

Your healthcare provider will receive your results; they will not be sent directly to you. Every healthcare provider may have a different method and timeframe for reviewing your results with you, so it is important to discuss this process with them when your test is performed. Your healthcare provider will discuss recommended next steps based on your test results.

For patients with a positive or VUS result, complimentary genetic counseling sessions are available via a third-party organization with board certified genetic counselors. They provide counseling services via telehealth.
