The sixteen participants have been announced for the second annual Battle for the Breasts hosted by Mauli Ola Foundation and presented by Ambry Genetics, a virtual surf video contest on Surfline.com. The world’s top female surfers will go head-to-head during October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) to raise awareness and compete for genetic testing vouchers donated by Ambry Genetics on behalf of Mauli Ola Foundation to the qualifying cancer clinics.
“Early detection for breast cancer is the key to making this disease curable. Targeting women to appropriate screening, based on their personal or family history, or genetic testing results, is the most effective mechanism we have for preventing breast cancer and saving lives,” said Charles Dunlop, CEO of Ambry Genetics.”
The surfers in the event will represent sixteen randomly selected cancer centers/clinic foundations for the chance to win up to $125,000 worth of hereditary breast cancer testing vouchers. The top 4 surfer/clinic pairings will win genetic testing vouchers for the foundation they are chosen to represent. The remaining 12 surfer/clinics will also receive a voucher for a comprehensive BRCA1/2 analysis for participating in the contest. Ambry Genetics plans to donate all vouchers for testing to these foundations on behalf of the surfer’s overall performance.
“We’re super excited to bring back the second installment of this powerful charity surf event,” said Mike Cianciulli, Event Producer. “Not only do we get to highlight some of the best women’s surfing in the world, but also raise awareness while supporting such a great cause.”
Last year’s winner, Bethany Hamilton, recently welcomed a baby boy and will not be competing this year, but is in full support of this year’s cast of competitors. The full list of athletes in the running are: Tatiana Weston-Webb, Carissa Moore, Courtney Conlogue, Alana Blanchard, Coco Ho, Sage Erickson, Laura Enever, Silvana Lima, Lakey Peterson, Bianca Buitendag, Nikki Van Dijk, Dimity Stoyle, Alessa Quizon, Johanne Defay, Pauline Ado and Mahina Maeda.
“The Battle is real,” said Hans Hagen, Mauli Ola Foundation Executive Director. “The key to surviving breast cancer is early detection. By pairing the top sixteen professional women surfers with these cancer foundations and clinics, our goals are to educate a younger audience, provide aid to those who don’t have access to genetic testing and simultaneously elevate the sport.”
The bracket-style online video competition will see the playing field narrow throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Check Surfline.com throughout the month to vote on each round and follow the surfers to victory.
