Clinical Neurogenetic Testing: Past, Present, and Future with Laina Lusk, MMSc, LCGC

  • In this webinar, we will review the common types of tests used in neurogenetics: what they can detect, what are they cannot detect, and when to consider their use. We will examine the rapidly changing landscape of genetic discovery, insurance coverage, and professional guidelines and how this impacts clinical practice. Finally, we will discuss overall trends in genetic testing in the neurology space, and where neurogenetics appears to be heading in the near future.

Genetic Counselor at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Laina is a licensed certified genetic counselor at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Clinically, she specializes in patients with epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, hemiplegic migraine, and a range of other neurodevelopmental disorders in the Epilepsy NeuroGenetics Initiative (or ENGIN) program. She is a member of the Helbig lab, where her research interests include variant curation, gene curation, deep phenotyping, and using large datasets and bioinformatics to illuminate the genotypes and phenotypes of neurodevelopmental genes. Prior to her work at CHOP, she was involved with research on neurodevelopmental genetic disorders at both Geisinger and Simons Searchlight.

Genomic Science Liaison at Ambry Genetics

Jessica Gage is a Rare Disease Genomic Science Liaison at Ambry Genetics for the Great Plains and Midwest Regions. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Penn State University and her Master of Science in Genetic Counseling at California State University- Stanislaus. In her current role, she serves as a clinical liaison for the field team to educate health care providers and key opinion leaders on genetic testing and genomic medicine. Jess is a board-certified genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
