Understanding Polygenic Risk Scores: The Next Step in Individualizing Breast Cancer Risk Assessment with Ora Karp Gordon, MD, MS

• This webinar will canvas the foundational literature on GWAS studies for breast cancer risk.  The development and validation of polygenic risk scores (PRS) for breast cancer both as an independent risk factor for breast cancer, and in combination with classic risk models such as Gail, Tyrer- Cusick and BODICEA will be reviewed. 

  Appropriate candidates for breast cancer PRS, limitations, and future directions will be discussed.

Ora Karp Gordon, MD, MS | Presenter

   

Dr. Gordon is a nationally recognized expert in hereditary cancer and medical director of the Regional Center for Clinical Genetics & Genomics for Providence Southern California.  She is a Professor of Genetics at the John Wayne Cancer Institute and Associate Professor of Genetics at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine.

Dr. Gordon graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University and earned her masters of Science and medical degrees from the University of California, Irvine. She completed internship and residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she also completed a fellowship in genetics.  Dr. Gordon is board certified in internal medicine and medical genetics.  Her primary research interests include hereditary cancers and the prevention of breast cancer. She has participated in numerous clinical trials for cancer prevention. Passionate about the holistic approach to medicine, she is completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona’s Center for Integrative Medicine in 2017 to expand options for primary prevention and research.

Dr. Gordon has lectured throughout the United States. In addition to her research publications, she also has co-authored an award winning book for women facing genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer, called Positive Results: making the best decisions when at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Alexandria Meyer | Moderator

   

Alexandria Meyer is a genetic counselor who has specialized in cancer genetics for 10 years.  She received her Master’s in Medical Genetics from the University of Wisconsin in 2006 and her Master’s in Bioethics from King’s College of London in 2015.  Alex has had many roles as a genetic counselor, including in public health, clinical practice, and as a genetic specialist for Ambry Genetics.  She currently lives in Southern California, though travels the world as much as she can, eating as many different foods as possible.
