RNA-Seq as a Complement to DNA Genetic Testing

In this presentation Dr. Karam will summarize RNA-sequencing technologies. The focus of the presentation will be describing the use of these technologies to aid understanding and diagnosing genetic disease.

Rachid obtained his medical degree in Brazil, at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre, one of the most reputable medical schools in the country. Rachid has a PhD in Oncogenetics, and did his graduate studies on the role of the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway in the regulation of the CDH1 gene expression, at University of Porto, in Europe, and at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. He did his postdoc at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, where he focused on RNA biology research. Rachid joined Ambry Genetics in 2014, and currently he is the Director of Ambry’s Translational Genomics (ATG) Lab.

Michael H. Lipps II, MS, CGMBS, MB(ASCP) received a Bachelor of Science focused in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado at Denver and earned his Master of Science in Biotechnology focusing on Biotech Enterprise and Entrepreneurship from the Johns Hopkins University.  Prior to transitioning into the clinical diagnostics field in 2010, his initial training occurred in the university’s biochemistry research laboratory centered on the bioremediation of xenobiotics in the environment.  Michael joined Ambry Genetics in 2011 as a clinical laboratory scientist and drove the adoption and implementation of the high throughput NGS technologies currently operating in the SuperLab.  His current role is in support of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at Ambry Genetics where he ensures alignment with agency requirements and helps drive continuous improvement efforts across the organization.
