Experience of a Genetic Testing Laboratory with Customizable Hereditary Cancer Panels
Customizable panels are being used in various ways, from ordering all available genes, to adding/removing genes to/from an existing test.
While providers were more likely to select clinically-actionable genes, some genes without published management guidelines (BARD1, MRE11A, and RAD50) were ordered in half of custom panel cases.
Further investigation into the rationale for pursuing a custom panel, the reason genes are included or excluded, and the clinical histories of the tested patients is needed to better understand this testing approach.
